HMQG Scrap Jar Challenge

This year the Houston Modern Quilt Guild started a new giveaway/challenge... the Scrap Jar.

HMQG Scrap Jar

This jar, which is STUFFED full of fabric, is passed around the guild each month. The person that "wins" the jar for the month has to make something (anything) from the fabrics. Whatever she makes is given to the next person that "wins" the jar.

HMQG Scrap Jar

So in July I won the jar and this cute pincushion made by the previous person.

And I pulled out a bunch of the blues to make this fun quilt-as-you-go dumpling (a free pattern from Michelle Patterns).

A Baby Quilt and A Challenge

Last week my husband's nephew became the proud dad to a beautiful little girl. It will be some time before we can get to Oklahoma for a visit, so the next best thing is to send love in the form of a quilt for the baby.

But I hadn't started the quilt yet. And hubby wanted to send off some baby gifts this week. So Saturday night he issued a challenge... if he could keep the kiddo entertained on Sunday, could I make a quilt in a day. Oh yes... game on!

Modern Roses Baby Quilt

I used Fat Quarter Shop's new (free) pattern Jelly Roll Jam II and it all came together so fast! Just under 5 hours from opening the Jelly Roll to machine stitching the binding onto the front of the quilt. I hand-stitched the binding to the back, so that probably doubled my total time. But I stitched while riding in the car, to and from work Monday and Tuesday, so it really wasn't a big imposition (and I love the process of hand-stitching binding!)

Modern Roses Baby Quilt

I gave serious thought to running out to my local quilt shop for a bit more fabric from this line for the backing. But it started raining Sunday afternoon (and I would have had to actually get out of my pajamas), so I decided to stay home and use what I had on hand. And I love it! It doesn't photograph very well, but in real life that backing is just a shade darker than the colors in the quilt top. And big pat on my back for using what I had on hand (because let's be honest... there's no way I would have left the shop with only my backing!)
