Florence Lone Star

Houston Modern Quilt Guild was given the amazing opportunity to play with Denyse Schmidt's upcoming fabric line Florence. Fabrics arrived in mid-April and most everyone jumped right into making their projects (Becca even finished her project in time to send it off for Denyse's Quilt Market booth!)

Like usual, I came up with a hundred ideas for my bundle of 18 fat-eights, but I just couldn't commit to one... either the size of the cuts wasn't right, or the colors weren't right, or the pattern wasn't right. The one idea I kept coming back to was a lone star. During the Post Sewing Summit Swap Deb made the MOST AMAZING lone star mini-quilt for her partner. I've probably looked at the Flickr picture once a week since November, and every time I think "someday..." Well, what better time than a challenge to try out something new!

Florence Star

I used Janice's tutorial for a Scrappy Lone Star and it came together so easily! In fact, the star was easier than adding on the extra background fabric (since after chopping off some of the pieced star I was working with lots of angles that needed to be squared up).

Florence Star

I can't wait to hang this on the wall in my sewing room.

Prince Charming Quilt

If you've been around here for a while, you might have figured out that I LOVE shopping for fabric. And most of the time I really don't have any idea what I'm going to do with the fabric I buy... I fold it, stack it on my shelf, and wait for inspiration to strike.

Prince Charming Quilt

And that's exactly what happened with Tula Pink's Prince Charming. I just knew I had to have it, but I'd be darned if I knew what I wanted to make with it. So it sat... waiting for the right project. Whatever I made had to be something with nice big pieces... wouldn't want a quilt full of headless Frog Princes, right?

Prince Charming Quilt

While wondering around International Quilt Festival last Fall I found the perfect pattern! Fat Quarter Frolic by Larisa Key Designs. The pieces range in size from 3.5" x 5.5" to 8.5" x 16.5" ... no headless Frog Princes here!

Prince Charming Quilt

The pattern went together fast! A few late nights while hubby was away on business and I had the quilt cut and pieced. I wanted something special for the quilting, and I knew right where to go... Joanna aka Designs by Laura Jo. I think this is the third quilt she has worked on for me... I love each one more than the last! And I never hesitate to offer up Joanna's name whenever someone mentions needing a quilt longarmed... her work is fantastic!

Simple Abundance Postage Stamp Quilt

Without a doubt, my favorite kind of piecing is simple patchwork.

Simple Abundance Postage Stamp

I've had this top pieced for about a year and a half. I kept meaning to quilt it up... but somehow it got stuck at the bottom of the pending pile. Well, a couple of weeks ago I stitched up a backing, loaded it onto the HandiQuilter, and spent an evening doing a quick all-over meander.

Simple Abundance Postage Stamp

I stitched the binding down last week while watching the Bruins-Blackhawks Stanley Cup games 1 and 2 (go Bruins!!)  I even grabbed a little cat nap under it Saturday almost as soon as it was done (while waiting for an overtime period to begin).

Four

At what point do I admit that I have too many cross-stitch projects going on at one time? Four?

Frosted Pumpkin WIPs

I've come to realize that I have zero self-control when it comes to The Frosted Pumpkin Stitchery releasing new samplers. And with each new one they release I tell myself I'm going to keep up this time (that justifies putting the last one aside, right?)

I'm actually doing pretty good with the Summer Sampler... I took this picture last weekend with just 7 frames complete, and now I have only a few frames left. I owe it to the Boston Bruins... I've spent a lot of time on the sofa this week watching the Stanley Cup games with cross-stitch in hand!

A Lovely Year of Finishes - June Goal

It wasn't hard to pick a goal for June... Houston Modern Quilt Guild was invited to participate in a challenge using Denyse Schmidt's upcoming fabric line Florence. Free fabric... not yet available in stores... that we get to make whatever we want with... YES, YES and YES!

DS Challenge Fabrics

The fabric arrived in April, and as usual I've been tossing back and forth a hundred ideas.  But I think I may have finally settled on something!  And just in time... our projects need to be completed, photographed, and added to the Flickr challenge group by July 1st.

bloglovin'

So Google Reader is going away... I'm not great with change, and I've kind of been ignoring the fact that Reader will be gone soon.  But I have looked at a few new options, and I think my favorite so far is bloglovin'.

So if you'd like to follow me over there, you can click this link.  And as soon as I figure out the button, I'll have it on my sidebar!

Now does anyone know if bloglovin' can be added to the Flipboard iPad app?
