October - Where Did You Go?

I can't believe October is already here and gone! It was another one of those months where I never even got a chance to change the kitchen calendar from September.

I thought about doing posts for Sewing Summit and Quilt Market wrap-ups, but I still don't have my head together (or my bags unpacked), and I really didn't take more than a handful of pictures at either event. So I'll leave the wrap-ups to others with better pictures (check out the Flickr stream of my HMQG-buddy Fi - she got some awesome pictures at both events!)

So instead I thought I'd do a little October in Review:

* I finished up some fun projects this month... some zipper bags, a baby quilt, bunting, travel sewing kits, metal pouch, a couple of EPP projects, a mini quilt, and a quick, fun quilt for a Quilt Market booth

October In Review

* We had a super-fun swap at the HMQG meeting

A few of the quilts for the HMQG mini-quilt challenge.

* I got to spend some fun days with a fantastic group of ladies... sewing, shopping, traveling, in classes... these ladies kept me laughing all month long!

* And I had the most amazing salad on the planet.  I think a campaign to bring Cafe Rio to Houston is in order!

* But the month wasn't all about me... we also spent some family time together.  A trip to the zoo, our first shopping trip to the new Trader Joe's (where Megan found the Woody doll right away), a visit to the duck pond, and a couple of trips to Build-A-Bear.

Beautiful day for a carousel ride.

So what will November bring? Hopefully I'll finish up the projects from my Sewing Summit classes, quilt a couple of long-overdue tops (Washi!!), and piece together a new top with some fabrics I picked up at Quilt Market.

HMQG Mini-Quilt Swap

The Houston Modern Quilt Guild held a mini-quilt swap last weekend. The only guideline was to use the HMQG logo colors as inspiration.

New Logos for the Houston Modern Quilt Guild

I went with a literal interpretation, both in color and quilt design.

Mini Made for HMQG Challenge

I started with Kelly's wonky foundation pieced alphabet... changing the h and q of her pattern into capital letters.

Tula Pink backs my HMQG mini

For the back I used a piece of Tula Pink's Parisville (the same backing I used on my first Scrap Vomit quilt). I grabbed it because the piece of fabric I had was the perfect size for the backing... but after looking closer I realized it has a lot of the same colors as the logo.

Quilt Label

We ended up having 17 quilts up for swap! And before the swapping craziness started, each person stood and gave a little bit of information on their inspiration. It was lots of fun hearing all the stores! And I came home with a quilt made by Sally.

Quilt I received in the swap - Made by Sally

The cookies at the bottom... that's actually a picture frame stitched into the quilt. (okay... I'd be lying if I said I didn't secretly hope the picture meant the quilt came with some homemade cookies!!)

And Sally isn't Sally without some embroidery... how cute is this little sheep?!?

Travelling PicStitch Blog Hop

Hello There! Today is my turn on the Travelling PicStitch Blog Hop

After 5 days at Disney World last year, we came home with probably 1,000 pictures between our phones, my camera, and the Disney World photographers. And by far, this is my favorite one of them all!

Photo0256FourBySix

I ran the picture through a palette builder and it came up with a half-dozen colors.

A trip through my fabric stash came up with a good selection of fabrics...

...Which I narrowed down to 4

... and whipped up into a diamond star.

I'm not sure what I'll do with the piece... maybe I'll add it to a pillow front.

So... want to know my super-special Disney World secret?  If your kids like to collect character autographs, forgo the blank books they sell in all of the shops and order this book RIGHT NOW!  Our book has been on 2 Disney World trips and the characters love autographing their page in the book!!  We have had the best character interactions thanks to this book... even the non-speaking characters get really excited seeing their pictures in the book.

Prince Eric asked Megan to recreate one of the pictures from his page.  Remember the scene in the movie when Eric gets washed ashore after the storm at sea breaks up his ship?  Yep... they recreated that scene.. with direction from Ariel.

Thanks for stopping by! And remember, the party goes on through the end of November, with a link up and some great prizes. And make sure you visit Deborah at Little Ms. Sew-Unsew tomorrow for her stop on the Blog Hop.

Sewing Summit 2012

I'm headed to Utah tomorrow morning for this year's Sewing Summit. I have to be up crazy-early (3:30am!!!) and I haven't packed a single thing yet (waiting for laundry to finish.) And what am I doing at 8:00pm... watching TV and reading blogs!

So what better time to show the handmade items I'm taking with me!

To start with, I'm reusing a couple of things...

New for this year I've got another bag...

Mail Sack

... a couple of zipper pouches...

...and a travel sewing kit...

(mine is the one made from 1974 and the Flower Sugar one I'm sending to my mom)

I had grand plans for some new handmade tops, and I really wish I was traveling with a cool Weekender after seeing them pop up all over Instagram... but with or without those things it will be a FANTASTIC weekend!
