Scrappy Tumbler

You might have figured out that I'm not the fastest at completing quilts. Somewhere along the process I'm bound to put the project aside for a few weeks (... or months... or years!!). Not for any reason other than the start of a new project is just so much more exciting.

So imagine my surprise when I realized cutting, piecing, quilting, and binding for this quilt were done during June!

Scrappy Tumbler

I really love the scrappy-ness of this quilt! After I stitched the last of the binding on Friday night I made a list of the fabrics in this quilt...

HMQG Evening Sew-In

Houston Modern Quilt Guild held the first (of many, many more I hope!) evening sew-in session yesterday. 6 hours of friends, sewing, laughing, and food... what better way to start off the week?!?

I didn't really have any idea of what I wanted to bring to work on. Of course I have WIPs that I could have brought, or any number of quilt tops that need quilting, and let's not forget the ever-growing list of things I want to make... But in the end I decided to attack my scrap bin once again.

Hubby and I spent Saturday and Sunday evening watching The IT Crowd on Netflix and between fits of giggles I managed to cut enough 2.5", 4.5", and 6.5" squares from my scraps to get started on a Magic Numbers quilt.

Magic Numbers Blocks

See I've been in love with THIS quilt from Katie for some time now, and I even have this month's Grace circle of do. Good Stitches making one. But this one is all from my scraps, and all for me... and I'm already in love with it!

Made in Cherry - Made in Swoon

I finished this one up over the weekend.

Made in Cherry - Made in Swoon

LOVE IT!!

It originally started as a quilt along... of course long over now... and I've had it basted since February or March... but once I decided to get it finished up, it came together quickly.

Made in Cherry - Made in Swoon

The binding was a true community effort... I couldn't decide between pink and green, so I put it out to my Instagram buddies. Pink was the overwhelming response. But then brown was suggested. So I tried that out to. Now I was stuck between pink and brown. I hate those decisions where there is no wrong answer... the pink would look fabulous, but the brown would frame the quilt nicely. I spent a day with the quilt on the floor auditioning binding. Finally I came to a decision... brown with a touch of pink. And I'm so happy with it! Thanks for all the help IG friends!

Fabric Selection

Fabrics for my quilt projects tend to fall into 2 categories:

Scrappy
or
Designer Collections
(usually precuts)

It simply comes down to a matter of ease... by the time all is said and done for the day, if I'm able to get some sewing time in, it is usually from 8pm until I can't keep my eyes open any longer (keeping in mind that we're all up at 5am.) So not having to think of pattern, texture, scale, and color when pulling fabrics just makes it so much easier on me.

But truth be told, I'm super envious of the beautiful quilts I see on Flickr, on blogs, and on Instagram that don't stick to using just one fabric collection. Those quilts where each piece has been individually and purposefully selected.

So when I decided to start on a new project, I challenged myself to step away from scrappy... step away from collections... and hand-pick each fabric I'll be using.

Playing with Fabric Options

Tonight I started out by pulling a good selection of red and blue fabrics. And while I wait for the pattern to arrive I'll play around with these... taking some out, adding some different ones in...

I'm really excited to see this quilt come together!

Scrappy Tumbler

I've been kicking around the idea of a scrappy tumbler quilt for a while now. Partly because I love tumbler quilts, and partly because something needs to be done with the scrap bins...

Scraps
That picture is from December... it is even fuller now!

So Sunday and Monday evening I went through all 6 bins, cutting 1 tumbler from any scrap that was big enough (they need about a 5" x 5" piece of fabric). I realized something... most of my scraps are small... too small to cut tumblers. But I did manage to get 148 tumblers cut (with only 1 repeat I think).

The start of a Scrappy Tumbler quilt. 148 cut so far.

I figure I need 141 more to make a decent size lap quilt. And now for a decision...
*Do I go back through the scrap bins and cut more from those scraps that are big enough?
*Do I start cutting up fat quarters?
*Or do I keep this entirely scrappy and wait until I have more big scraps in the bin?
