Blogger's Quilt Festival

Blogger's Quilt Festival is here again! As soon as Amy posted about this Fall's event, I knew which quilt I wanted to show.

When I found out my friend Aimee was expecting a baby I began knocking around the idea of making the little one a quilt. And when I found out she was having a girl I knew Fig Tree's Fresh Cottons line would be perfect!

Fresh Cottons Baby Quilt

So I knew what I was going to do, and what fabric I was going to use, but just hadn't gotten around to starting on the quilt yet. Then I got the baby shower invitation... but I still hadn't started the quilt. Then a week before the shower the little one made a surprise early arrival.... okay, now its really time to get started!

Fresh Cottons Baby Quilt

This quilt came together so quickly! I pieced and basted it one day, and the night before the shower I quilted and finished the binding.

Few things better than a new quilt for a new baby.

My Little Tinkerbell

The Halloween costume is done and ready for tomorrow's school party.

I am so happy that I went with Robert Kaufman Kona fabrics (Apple and Pear) rather than satin, tulle, and other "fancy" fabrics the pattern called for. The pattern went together easily and Megan is very comfortable wearing it (she didn't want to take off tonight).

Week 43 Stash Report

I started out this week with no plans for a Halloween costume for Megan... we don't have much trick-or-treating in our neighborhood, Megan's an early-to-bed kind of kid, and I didn't want to go to the city celebration. But then I found out her class is having a Halloween party and the kids can wear costumes. So I thought I'd go buy her something simple. But after a couple of days I got the great idea that I'd make her a costume.

A quick trip to Hobby Lobby and $25+ later I have 4 yards of Kona cotton (Apple and Pear) ready to turn into Tinkerbell.

I just realized that my year of weekly stash reports is going to have 53 weeks. Yes, I know there are 52 weeks in a year, but I wrapped up Week 1 on the first Sunday of the year (January 3). So maybe I should have called this little experiment Sunday Stash Report... 53 Sunday reports doesn't look as strange as 53 Weekly reports. Oh well!!

The 4 Hour Quilt Block

I don't think I've ever spent 4+ hours on one quilt block... until today.

I saw this block, loved it, and thought it would be a quick and easy star to make for this month's Fresh Modern Bee. I even started thinking of fabrics I could use to make a quilt for myself out of this block.

Star Block

I started late this morning by drawing out the 5 sections. Then after lunch I started sewing... and ironing... and sewing... and ironing... and I L.O.V.E how it turned out!!

I'm almost too embarrassed to return the "extra" fabric to this month's Bee host... she sent 4 fat-eights of the prints and a fat-quarter of solid fabric... and there really are only scraps left.

Quilt + Dog

Sometimes dogs and quilts don't mix. I found this out last year.

And a friend learned this same lesson recently.

Quilt Meets Dog

I was able to find 1 online quilt shop with the right fabric for the front of the quilt. This red must have been a popular color... so many shops still had the beige and brown colorway. I was so happy when I tracked down the red!!

Repaired - Front

I couldn't find a match for the backing, so I picked something from my scrap bin that matched as best as I could.

Repaired - Back

Maybe one of these days I'll get around to fixing my quilt.

Week 42 Stash Report

I really didn't mean to miss last week's Stash Report... but it had been an exhusting day and the only thing I added to the stash was some Kona cotton to be used as backings.

This week wasn't any more exciting... more Kona cotton for backings. Somehow I miscalculated for both quilts when I went shopping last week. So today, instead of piecing those backings, I was back at the store for more Kona cotton. Maybe this week I'll finally get those 2 quilts basted.

And just so this isn't another post without pictures... here's what I'm mailing off tomorrow for the SavVy Seasons Swap. I hope my partner likes her goodies and it helps with the long, cold winter.

A Breath of Avignon

I finished piecing this quilt together over the weekend. I really love the simplicity of the design and colors!

A Breath of Avignon

I think this one is going to be gift... a great big Thank You gift!

Now I've just got to get it quilted... maybe this weekend when the Houston Modern Quilt Guild meets at my house I can get started on it.

Chocolate & Caramel Party Mix

A friend had a birthday this week, and that gave me a chance to make my Chocolate & Caramel Party Mix. I love this recipe!! It is easy, makes a ton, and is always popular.

Party Mix

9 cups oven-toasted corn cereal squares
4 cups popped popcorn
1 1/2 cups dry-roasted peanuts
1 cup packed light brown sugar
1/2 cup butter
1/2 cup light corn syrup
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1 3/4 cups chocolate chips
1 package milk chocolate covered pretzels

1. Preheat oven to 250 degrees. Grease a large roasting pan (or two smaller pans).

2. Mix cereal, popped popcorn, and peanuts in a large bowl. Pour into prepared pan.

3. Combine brown sugar, butter, and corn syrup in a medium, heavy-duty saucepan. Bring to a boil over medium heat, stirring constantly. Boil, without stirring, for 5 minutes. Remove from heat; stir in vanilla extract and baking soda. Pour over cereal mixture; stir evenly to coat.

4. Bake for 45 mintues, stirring every 15 minutes. Cool completely in pan, stirring frequently to break apart mixture. Stir in chocolate chips and chocolate covered pretzels. Store in an airtight container.

Freckled Whimsy Quiltalong

I had a little time to myself yesterday and took the opportunity to FINALLY get the borders on my Freckled Whimsy Charm Pack Quilt.

I L.O.V.E. this quilt!! And now the debate... quilt this on my machine or take it over to my mom's and quilt it on her longarm machine?

Freckled Whimsy Charm Pack Quiltalong

And I decided to piece the borders together using a diagonal seam rather than a straight seam this time... I like how it turned out.

Week 40 Stash Report

I missed last week's report... really didn't have much to report.

This week I finished up a couple of things, made progress on a few other things, and am looking forward to working on a few projects next week!

Minimalism by Theft

Have you been over to Crystal's new blog? I absolutely love her Minimalism by Theft idea!!

Over the last couple of years we've sort of outgrown our house. It seams a little silly... this house that the 3 of us live in is bigger than the house I grew up in, and there were 5 of us living there. I've started clearing some closets... I've got 5 garbage bags full of Megan's clothes ready to take to the Women's Center Resale Shop. And Chris bought me a Kindel a couple of weeks ago... I love it!!! Now I just need to work on clearing out the bookcases (will I ever really read all those books?)

And now I'm going to give Minimalism by Theft a try. I've asked Chris to "steal" one thing from me each day this month. He asked if anything was off-limits... I only ask that he not "steal" from a current project on my sewing table. After all, the goal is to see what's lying around the house that I no longer need... and not to drive me crazy.

Want to see what Crystal found in her box? Check out her posts here and here.
